Portraits & Figurative Works

As a portrait artist, I draw baby portraits, child portraits, bridal portraits, adult portraits, pet portraits, historical/ancestral portraits, and corporate/official portraits. For commissioned portrait drawings, I work in graphite pencil, charcoal, or black and white charcoal/pencil on acid-free paper (white, ivory, or colored). I work from life or photographs.
All my art is rendered freehand (no computer or projector aid).
(Note: "Figurative" works are those that are not formal portraits but that are of people.)
Let me create a treasured heirloom for your family... or a unique gift for somebody special!

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams....

--John Keats (1795-1821), from "Endymion"

"Without freedom, no art; art lives only on the restraints it imposes on itself, and dies of all others."

--Albert Camus

"A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul."

--Goethe (1749-1832)

"'Didn't you find drawing infernally difficult, Blyth, when you first began?'" "'I find it difficult still, Master Zack,' replied Mr Blyth. 'Art wouldn't be the glorious thing it is, if it wasn't all difficulty from beginning to end; if it didn't force out all the fine points in a man's character as soon as he takes to it.'"

--Wilkie Collins, in Hide and Seek (1854)

"A man's manners are a mirror in which he shows his portrait."

--Goethe (1749-1834)

"The arts teach and moralise by their beauty alone, not by translating a philosophical or social formula. For the truly artistic person, painting has itself as it's purpose, which is quite enough."

--Theophile Gautier, 1861

"Of all the cants which are canted in this canting world -- though the cant of hypocrites may be the worst -- the cant of criticism is the most tormenting! I would go fifty miles on foot...to kiss the hand of that man whose generous heart will give up the reins of his imagination into his author's hands -- be pleased he knows not why, and cares not wherefore."

--Laurence Sterne (1713-1768), in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman

"To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong."

--Joseph Chilton Pearce

"The excellence of every art is its intensity, capable of making all disagreeables evaporate, from their being in close relationship with Beauty and Truth."

--John Keats (1795-1821)

...I sought fit words to paint the blackest face of woe,
Studying inventions fine, her wits to entertain,
Oft turning others' leaves, to see if thence would flow
Some fresh and fruitful showers upon my sunburnt brain.
But words came halting forth, wanting Invention's stay;
Invention, Nature's child, fled step-dame Study's blows;
And others' feet still seemed but strangers in my way.
Thus great with child to speak, and helpless in my throes,
Biting my truant pen, beating myself for spite:
"Fool!" said my Muse to me, "look in thy heart and write."

--Sir Phillip Sidney (1554-1586),
from "Astrophel and Stella"
